You don’t have to rush to the gym to burn calories. Research has shown that a hot bath can lower blood sugar levels and have a positive effect on the heart.

A hot bath can provide benefits to the body comparable to a 30-minute walk, as well as positively impact blood sugar levels and blood pressure.

This was reported by Yourtango.

As part of an experiment led by Dr. Steve Faulkner of Loughborough University in the UK, 14 men underwent two trials: a one-hour bike ride and a one-hour soak in a bath with water at 38°C. In both cases, researchers aimed to raise participants’ body temperature by approximately one degree.

As expected, the cycling workout helped burn more calories. At the same time, an hour in a hot bath allowed for the burning of about 140 calories – roughly the same amount an average person expends during a 30-minute walk.

Furthermore, scientists monitored participants’ blood sugar levels for 24 hours after each trial. It was found that after meals, the peak glucose level on the day of the bath was approximately 10% lower than after the cycling workout.

Scientists explain this by the effect of passive heating – when body temperature increases without physical activity. According to research, this can have anti-inflammatory effects, improve cardiometabolic health, and reduce the risks of obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

A separate study from Oregon State University showed that regular hot baths can lower blood pressure. This is likely due to an increase in nitric oxide levels, which relaxes and dilates blood vessels.

Additionally, a 2015 Finnish study found a link between frequent sauna use and a lower risk of heart attacks and strokes in men.

However, experts emphasize that a hot bath cannot completely replace physical exercise. Workouts remain important for developing strength, endurance, lung function, and overall body strengthening. Nevertheless, on recovery days or when mobility is limited, a hot bath can be a beneficial addition to a healthy lifestyle.

Recall that regular exercise not only improves well-being but also significantly reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes in overweight individuals. Earlier, scientists identified physical exercises that lower blood pressure as effectively as medication.
