The reigning European U23 javelin champion, Artur Felfner, has inaugurated his 2026 international summer season with a “bronze” medal in Prague, Czech Republic.
Ukrainian javelin thrower Artur Felfner commenced his summer campaign in May with a victory at the national championships, achieving a throw of 76.88 meters. Felfner’s subsequent competition was at an international tournament in the Czech Republic – the Josef Odložil Memorial.
How did the competition unfold?
- With his initial throw, Felfner surpassed his season’s best, launching the javelin 79.37 meters. This performance placed the Ukrainian among the top three, trailing only Czech athlete Martin Konečný and South African competitor Douw Smit.
- While Felfner did not improve his mark in the second attempt, he **re-established a new season’s best in the third attempt with a throw of 80.27 meters.** This throw marked Felfner’s first performance exceeding 80 meters in the 2026 season.
- Felfner executed two more successful throws, with his final attempt also surpassing the 80-meter mark – the javelin traveled 80.18 meters. The Ukrainian concluded the competition with his best performance from the third attempt, which secured him the “bronze” medal.

This event marked Artur Felfner’s first international appearance of the summer season and his fourth competition of the current year. Previously, he claimed victory at the winter Ukrainian Throwing Cup, where he achieved his former season’s best of 78.55 meters. Additionally, the Ukrainian secured seventh place at the European Throwing Cup in Cyprus (76.55 m) and triumphed at the national championships (76.88 m).
Last season, Felfner contended with health issues, resulting in a limited number of starts. Nevertheless, he achieved second place at the European Team Championships in Madrid (80.54 m), successfully defended his European U23 Championship title (81.14 m), won the senior Ukrainian championship for the third time (80.70 m), and represented Ukraine at the World Championships in Tokyo, where he was eliminated in the qualification round (76.13 m).
Felfner’s personal best remains 84.32 meters, set in June 2022, which also stands as the current Ukrainian junior record.
